Download: Photoshop Brushes Series 36 17 hair, fur and fuzz brushes By Dave Nagel

If you've used any of our previous collections of hair and fur brushes for Adobe Photoshop, you've probably run into the same situation I have: a need for more and more variations. So our latest collection of brushes for Adobe Photoshop is an extension of these previous collections, offering some new styles, as well as variations on previous styles. As always, these brushes are free for you to download and use as you see fit.

The brushes

This new library of brushes for Adobe Photoshop--Nagel Series 36--offers custom brushes designed for creating hair and fur effects. Typically these sorts of brushes are used for creating human and animal texture maps in 3D applications to add a little depth to the surfaces of objects.

What you'll discover though is that these types of brushes have applications far outside this basic use, such as the creation of related effects (grass, moss and other foliage effects), as well as for generating deep textures for use in backgrounds or for creating abstract art. And, as has been the case in my own work, they can also be used to touch up photographic images where portions of a subject's hair may need some fixing up.

This latest collection (Nagel Series 36) offers 17 brushes in total, including nine hair brushes, three fur brushes and five fuzz brushes. The hair brushes include both short and curly styles and long and wavy styles. The fur brushes are softer and thicker than the hair brushes but are otherwise similar. And the fuzz brushes are new additions to the line, producing soft yet intricate effects.

All of the brushes, of course, are fully dynamic for size, scattering, color variation, opacity and other parameters. They can also be modified to suit your particular needs. Most are based on large strand samples, so you can freely adjust them to larger sizes without losing resolution.

Here are some samples of the brushes in this collection. Most of these examples were produced with multiple strokes using a variety of blending modes. The samples of the fuzz brushes, however, were each created with quick zig-zag strokes on the canvas.

Download and installation
This week's brush collection is compressed in a Zip archive, which can be decompressed using any Zip utility. (Simply double-click the file in Mac OS X to decompress it.) These brushes support Photoshop CS and Photoshop CS2 in Macintosh and Windows environments. They are also supported by recent versions of Adobe Photoshop Elements. These brushes will not function in Photoshop 7.

As always, this latest collection (Nagel Series 36) is free to download and use for commercial and non-commercial purposes.

Once you download the brush file (NagelSeries36.zip), expand it. (The expanded file will be called NagelSeries36.abr.). Then move the .abr file into the Brushes directory in your Photoshop folder (/Adobe Photoshop/Presets/Brushes) to make it accessible from the Brushes palette's flyaway menu once you launch Photoshop.

Then launch Photoshop. Open your Brushes palette, and click on the flyaway menu at the top right. There you'll find the new brush collection, listed in alphabetical order with the other brushes in your Brushes directory. You can install this collection simply by selecting it. After you select it, the new brushes will appear at the bottom of the list of available brushes. (Note that if the brushes do not appear in this flyaway menu, you can load them manually by selecting "Load Brushes" from the menu. A dialog will appear asking you to locate the brush file manually.)
