Adobe Photoshop Style Layer Effects: Series #14 Produce stunning effects quick and easy to your Photoshop projects By Don Lee

Number 14 in my series of Adobe Photoshop style layer tutorials has a little different taste to the design. The effects are named ?hurricane? and ?halloween.? Detailed instructions have been added to help the user install and implement the style layers into their next Photoshop project. Have fun and enjoy the effects!

Style effect #1:

In the first example, the phrase ?hurricane? was created using the Haettenschweiler font and the Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow, Inner Glow, Bevel & Emboss, Gradient Overlay, Pattern Overlay and Stroke. Creating this style layer was a lot of fun because it really shows you can utilize one of the Adobe supplied patterns in the style layer palette. Fortunately, there was a pattern named "clouds" that took this ordinary gray and dark blue gradient design and made it look like the darkening clouds of a incoming storm. By turning off the gradient pattern option in the style layer, you can see how plain the design becomes.

Style effect #2:

In the second example, the phrase ?halloween? is also created using the Haettenschweiler font and the Inner Shadow, Outer Glow, Inner Glow, Bevel and Emboss, Gradient Overlay, Pattern Overlay, Stroke settings. Similar to the first style layer, this one also utilizes the wax crayon on vellum pattern in the Pattern Overlay option to create the rough textuxe to the design. Using the traditional halloween colors of orange and yellow and a little black in the gradient, the design is more basic than the first but should be useful for the season.

To install the Style Layer effects into Adobe Photoshop (for Windows version although Mac version will be similar in location), you need to do the following steps:

Step #1: After downloading the ZIP file containing the Photoshop .ASL file, extract the .ASL file using a program like WinZip.

Step #2: Now extract the Style Layer file (named style14.asl) into your Adobe Photoshop Styles directory. Your Styles directory should reside in the location shown in Step 2 diagram. If Photoshop is not installed in this location, then you will need to locate the Photoshop on your hard drive and navigate to the Styles subdirectory so you can extract the file.

Step #3: After extracting the Style Layer file into your Photoshop Styles subdirectory, now you will need to load the .ASL file to have the three Style layer effects appear in your Styles palette. First, make sure your Styles palette is displayed by selecting Window>Styles. From your Styles palette, click on the arrow in the upper right (as shown) to display the pull down menu and select Load Styles from the options.

Step #4: Now select the Style Layer file (named style11.asl) from your Styles subdirectory within Photoshop. After selecting the file, press the LOAD button to the right and you should now see the three Style Layer effects appear in your palette. Have fun and enjoy!
